FAQ

What is the target age range?

This is an early elementary program geared towards children ages 4–8. In addition, there are several extension ideas throughout each unit so that lessons can be extended for older kids.

Do I need to purchase books or instruments?

No, it is not necessary to purchase any extra materials. However, if you wish to add these items you can see a full list of recommendations with links on our Resources page.

How long does it take to teach each daily lesson?

The average daily lesson will take around 10–15 minutes, but if you find that your student really loves a certain activity it could last longer.

Do the units have to be taught in a certain order?

The curriculum is designed so that units can be taught in any order you wish. There is one exception (Unit 12 Little Toot) which introduces the half note rhythm. Before students can grasp this concept, they need to have completed another unit that covers quarter note rhythms. You will find specific instructions in the introduction to MBM.

Is this curriculum only for homeschoolers?

No, Morning Basket Music can be taught by any parent who wants to give their child a solid musical foundation. It can also be used in a class setting, and you will find specific directions for activities that can be adapted to either fit one parent/child or a teacher with several students.

What musical concepts are covered?

Children will explore high and low pitches with their singing voices. They will also begin reading basic rhythm notation including: quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests. They will play a variety of percussion instruments — whether purchased or homemade. Students will move their bodies both with creative movement and patterned dance. Finally, they will listen to several classical recordings and hear about various composers.

How can I teach music if I don’t feel confident in my own musical ability?

Many people might feel this way if they don’t have any sort of musical background. MBM was designed specifically for this type of person! You can feel confident knowing that these lessons are carefully written with clear instructions. Each unit includes several links for videos and recordings where you can hear someone perform a song. If you still have questions or need help with how to teach a certain concept, you can contact Leann directly. Also be sure to check out the Morning Basket Music YouTube Channel where you can find many helpful videos that explain how to teach musical concepts.
